Two Roles
A single bird's feather looks uniform, but its upper and lower halves do entirely different jobs.
The upper part, where the barbs interlock into a smooth, flat surface, catches the wind and repels water — the "vane" that makes flight and waterproofing possible. Tiny barbules extending from each barb hook onto their neighbors, zipping together into one continuous sheet.
The loose, downy base, by contrast, has no such hooks. Left unlinked, it traps plenty of air and becomes an insulating layer that holds body heat in — a structure for protection rather than flight.
This is why the feather in this artwork appears gathered at the top and unraveled toward the base: those two roles are written into its very shape.
