"Layered Petals"

A rose in full bloom, seen straight on. Its petals overlap toward the center in layer upon layer, drawing inward in a softly turning spiral. The distinctive color and dotted texture produced by special pigments give the bloom not the look of a photograph, but the soft, painterly quality of a single illustration.

The light-filled paleness of the center and the deepening orange toward the edges call to mind a freshly baked cinnamon roll. Unexpectedly, the finished piece carries an air of something very sweet.

Roses and Sweetness

While the rose is best known and beloved for its splendid appearance, it has also been enjoyed across the world for centuries as a sweet flavor. The most representative example is rosewater, distilled from rose petals by steam. In the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and South Asia, rosewater has been produced for thousands of years and remains an indispensable ingredient in confections and cooking. From Turkish lokum, to Persian faloodeh, to Indian gulab jamun, sweets fragranced with rose are found across the world.

In Europe, too, sugared rose petals, petals coated in crystallized sugar, were a fashionable delicacy among the upper classes during the Victorian era, and the tradition lives on in French confectionery today. Though the rose may appear to be a flower admired purely for its beauty, it has long carried within it another face: that of sweetness.
