Swash Zone
There is a special area at the shoreline called the "swash zone." It is where waves rush up and down the beach, making it appear as if the shore is breathing. This upward movement of waves, called "swash," works with the backwash to transport sand, creating beautiful beach formations.
In this ever-changing environment, small creatures like "beach hoppers" and "sand crabs" live in harmony with the wave rhythm. In the sand at the water's edge, bivalves such as "surf clams" and "tellin clams" burrow while filtering seawater. These creatures have established their own unique ecosystem in this specialized environment.
