The Secret of Jet Black
Crow feathers actually do not possess "black pigment." While the melanin pigment contained in the feathers is brown in color, the regular arrangement of melanin granules within the barbules causes most light to be absorbed, making them appear black. However, this absorption is not complete—the feathers' microscopic structure causes complex reflection and interference of specific wavelengths of light, resulting in the appearance of deep indigo or blue-violet mystical radiance under certain conditions.
This structural coloration phenomenon can also be observed in peacocks, morpho butterflies, and jewel beetles. Hidden within crows, often thought to be simply black, lies an exquisite work of art created by nature.
