"Spatial color mixing" is the phenomenon in which the human eye cannot recognize small color dots individually when they are closely spaced, and perceives them as a mixture of colors.
The elucidation of this phenomenon began with the discovery by 19th century French chemist Michel-Eugène Chevreul: our eyes judge colors not only by the color itself, but also by the influence of the surrounding light and colors, allowing us to judge colors relatively.
