A single thistle flowerhead, as though cut and set afloat against the black. The upper half opens into a delicate crown of pale violet, while the lower half is drawn in a gradation of soft gray to deep charcoal, bristling with sharp, pointed bracts.

Thistles

Thistles (genus Cirsium) are perennial herbs of the daisy family Asteraceae, with some 250 species worldwide and more than 100 distributed across Japan — a familiar presence among wild plants. The spherical bloom depicted in this artwork is known in botany as a capitulum, or flowerhead. What appears to be a single flower is in fact a tight cluster of countless tiny tubular florets — a defining feature shared by the entire daisy family. The sharply pointed bracts (the involucre) that surround the flowerhead serve to protect the bloom from grazing animals and insects; the thorns, in other words, have a purpose.

Across the world, the thistle has long been embraced as a symbolic flower. Most famous is the legend behind its place as the national flower of Scotland. According to tradition, on a certain medieval night a Danish force crept barefoot into a Scottish encampment hoping to launch a surprise attack. They trod upon the spines of wild thistles growing in the field and cried out in pain — alerting the Scottish soldiers, who held the land. Ever since, the thistle has been borne as the "guardian flower" upon the nation's coat of arms, paired with the Latin motto Nemo me impune lacessit — "No one provokes me with impunity" — as an emblem of Scottish pride.
