"Punctata"
This artwork depicts a jellyfish moving through a dark sea, drifting leisurely yet seemingly headed somewhere. Its lovable mushroom-like form is elegantly portrayed in bright colors, standing out distinctly in the tranquil ocean. The jellyfish's appearance is as if it's exploring the sea, evoking a sense of mystery while simultaneously conveying a quiet yet powerful will.
South Pacific Octopus Jellyfish (Phyllorisa punctata)
The Afro-octopus jellyfish is a large jellyfish with distinctive white spots scattered on its umbrella, and in many areas, it is deep brown in color due to the influence of algae that live symbiotically inside its body. The umbrella diameter can reach 30-50cm, and its gelatinous body floats leisurely in the water. It preys on plankton and other creatures with its eight oral arms.
Its natural habitat is the tropical and subtropical waters from the Indian Ocean to the Western Pacific Ocean, but in recent years, polyps (jellyfish larvae) that have slipped into the ballast water of ships have been carried all over the world, spreading its distribution to temperate zones that are not its natural habitat. It has now been spotted in the Mediterranean Sea, the Caribbean Sea, and the Pacific coast of the United States. Interestingly, the Afghan Octopus Jellyfish found in the Gulf of Mexico is almost transparent, not brown, because it does not have a symbiotic relationship with algae.
This expansion of their habitat sometimes leads to mass outbreaks, raising concerns about their impact on ecosystems. When they do, they consume large amounts of plankton, which is the food of native species, and this can upset the balance of the ecosystem. There have also been reports of damage to fishing and industry, such as clogging fishing nets and blocking water intakes at power plants.
On the other hand, their graceful appearance and unique beauty attract many people, and in Japan you can enjoy them at several aquariums, including Kamo Aquarium, which boasts the world's largest number of jellyfish exhibits.
